Primary Food, Reflections from Institute of Integrative Nutrition
A healthy lifestyle can't be achieved solely in the gym, out on the trails, or by following the latest fad diet. To lead a healthy lifestyle we must look at what the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN) calls primary + secondary foods. Primary food is much more than what is on your plate. Primary foods include physical activity, relationships, mental space, and career. When these primary foods are balanced, life feeds you, making the food you eat secondary.
Although my face doesn't show it in this photo (coordinated jumping is hard), taking time out of my daily grind to trail run in Switzerland, with my dear friends, helped balance my primary foods.
